Function Introduction
Using a digital function machine, determine the function that produces the interactive x, y table.

I can:
  • I can determine the function using an x, y table.

  • I can write an equation that represents an input/output table.

Tech Skills:
  • Use digital tools to write functions or expressions

  • Drag and Drop

Grade Level:
  • 6th Grade

Subject Area:
  • Mathematics

Procedure:

Activity 1

Have students begin on level 1 of the Math Playground Function Machine (this resources requires Flash Player so you must use Firefox or Safari to view - not Chrome). Allow them to move through level 3. Students will be able to input their own values as well as have the computer determine an input value. Be sure to encourage students to select input values that help them to see/determine the pattern.

Activity 2

Students who are able to write the basic function can now move to the advanced level. This level requires students to use the tool to write the equation that represents the x,y table using variables.

Standards:

6.EE.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers

6.EE.6 Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.
