Proportions, Ratios and Percents
Students will use their knowledge of ratios, proportions, and percents to solve real life problems.

I can:
  • I can determine the relationship between angles form from two parallel lines and a transversal.

  • I can solve problems and find all angle measures form from two parallel lines and a transversal.

  • Math
Procedure:

Activity 1

Go to this dunk tank activity (this activity requires Flash so you will need to use Firefox or Internet Explorer web browser) from PBS LearningMedia. Complete the activity either as a class or have the students finish it individually.

Have students complete the following warm-ups and get at least 8/10 prior to going onto the next activity.

Ratios Warm-Up Practice

Proportions Warm-Up Practice

Activity 2

Students will review percentages on their own using these guided notes.

After review, students will go to this mall activity to show their understanding of proportions and percentages.

Students should write and solve the problems using pencil and paper, just as they will for the test.

Practice Activity

Students will practice this quizlet as matching, quiz, or flashcards to ensure their understanding or proportions, ratios, and percentages.

Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.1 ( Grade 6 ): Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.2 ( Grade 6 ): Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3a ( Grade 6 ): Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3b ( Grade 6 ): Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3c ( Grade 6 ): Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent.

CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3d ( Grade 6 ): Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2a ( Grade 7 ): Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2b ( Grade 7 ): Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2c ( Grade 7 ): Represent proportional relationships by equations.

CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.3 ( Grade 7 ): Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
