Function Transformations
Students will learn about the effect on a graph from how the function is written.

I can:
  • I can determine the effect on a graph by it’s function.

  • I can write a function from looking at it’s graph.

Tech Skills:
  • Graphing

  • Typing Equations

Materials and Resources:

Smartboard/Projector

Student Laptop/Computer

Online Function Transformation Matching Game

Online AIR Demo Calculator
Grade Level:
  • 9th Grade
Subject Area:
  • Math

Procedure:

Activity 1

  1. Students will go to the online AIR demo calculator.

  2. They will need to follow instructions from this google doc.

  3. Students will graph a parent function and various transformations. They will then need to compare the transformations to their parent function and discover what happens.

  4. Go over the google doc with the students and talk with the class what rules the can create using c units.

Activity 2

  1. Have students go to https://www.desmos.com/calculator/mtfv66rxkl

  2. Students will need to follow the directions to show their understanding of how functions are transformed.

Practice Activity

Students will go to this online matching game where they will determine the type of transformation by comparing a function to it’s parent function.

Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.3

Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, k f(x), f(kx), and f(x + k) for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs. Experiment with cases and illustrate an explanation of the effects on the graph using technology. Include recognizing even and odd functions from their graphs and algebraic expressions for them.
